Antonio Margarito Wins 10 Round Decision Over Canelo Alvarez’s Brother

Antonio Margarito says he wants Canelo Alvarez next.  After winning a split decision over Canelo Alvarez’s older brother Ramon Alvarez by scores of 94-95, 97-92, 97-92, Margarito might get what he wants.

Antonio Margarito 40-8 (27 KO’s) won his second fight since 2011, when he announced his retirement, because of a surgically repaired right eye.  Margarito was a far cry from the “Tijuana Tornado” that ran through the Welterweight division before his 2009 TKO loss to Sugar Shane Mosley and when he was caught with loaded gloves.

Margarito and Ramon Alvarez exchanged hard shots for ten rounds. After a very slow first round, Antonio began working behind his jab and loading up on one, two combinations.

Ramon Alvarez gave a good showing, but he tired in the later rounds, and he was unable to avoid Margarito’s combinations.

After getting the split decision, Margarito made his intentions clear calling out Canelo Alvarez, and saying he only wants big fights.

“I want the big fights Cotto or Canelo.  I don’t want a rematch with Ramon. I am ready for big fights.  Now I want to beat his brother Saul.”

Antonio Margarito was slow on both defense and offense, but he sells tickets.  If Canelo can’t or doesn’t want to face Gennady Golovkin (GGG) after his September 17 showdown with Liam Smith at Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX, GoldenBoy Promotions and Canelo could sell a lot of Tickets in May for a Margarito Canelo showdown.
