Adonis Wilkins is a man with a singular purpose: to become the undisputed world welterweight champion. His determination and relentless pursuit of this goal are evident to anyone who has followed his career. Since his professional debut on November 4, 2023—when he secured a fourth-round technical knockout victory over Elias Ajuwa—Wilkins has demonstrated the qualities of a true champion. Observing his journey, it becomes clear that his drive and resilience are reminiscent of the themes in Grammy winner Shaboozey’s song “Last of My Kind,” which mirrors Wilkins’ unique spirit and unwavering commitment to his craft.

Ain’t many that are built like me
I’m the last of my kind
Grew up on a back road baby
I know how to survive
Been out with the young guns blazing
So you better not try
You won’t never find another like me
I’m the last of my kind

Yeah yeah
I’m the last of my kind
Yeah yeah
I’m the last of my kind

Adonis Wilkins was born and raised in Philadelphia as the youngest of eleven children, with nine boys and two girls in the family. His parents, Andre and Lisa Marie Wilkins, played influential roles in his upbringing. Andre Wilkins, who trained at the renowned Joe Frazier’s boxing gym, was also a close friend of welterweight contender Kevin “The Spoiler” Howard. Howard was the first to knock down Sugar Ray Leonard, doing so in round four of their May 11, 1984, fight. Although Leonard ultimately secured victory through a ninth-round technical knockout, the match remained highly competitive throughout

From an early age, Adonis was exposed to the world of boxing. At five years old, he often accompanied his seventeen-year-old brother Tyrique, who was active in the amateur boxing circuit. Despite his early exposure, Adonis did not begin formal training until the age of twelve. His father Andre was hesitant about him becoming a boxer. It was only after encouragement from his mother, Lisa Marie, that Andre agreed to allow Adonis to train, with the condition that he maintained strong academic performance. Both parents emphasized that education should take precedence over sports.

Got folks that carry some shit, uh
Can’t cross state lines
Ducking cops in the dirt hills baby
We ain’t paying no fines
If ya coming to the sticks then maybe
Bring a four-wheel drive
You won’t never find another like me
I’m the last of my kind

Adonis faced a profound turning point in his life when his beloved mother passed away on January 7, 2014. This tragedy deeply affected him, shaking the foundation of his world. Yet, amid the pain of loss, Adonis found renewed motivation, his determination grew stronger, fueled by the memory of his mother, who along with his father has always been his greatest supporter and advocate for his boxing career. Andonis and Andre resolved to honor her legacy in the best way they knew by striving for him to win a world title. Guided by this mission, their relationship, which has always been great, continues to flourish with Andre firmly at the helm as his son’s manager.

Adonis’s unwavering dedication to his boxing aspirations is evident in the disciplined approach he brings to his daily life. Motivated by his mission to become a world champion, he embraces a rigorous training regimen, constantly pushing himself to improve. Under the steady guidance of his head trainer, Greg Pritchett—whom Adonis respectfully calls “The Professor”—he has refined his craft through countless hours in the gym. Their partnership, rooted in mutual trust and proven results, began when Adonis was just a twelve-year-old amateur and has only strengthened with time.

Drawing inspiration from legendary champions, Marvelous Marvin Hagler became a model for Adonis to emulate. He studied Hagler’s techniques, discipline, and approach to the sport, integrating these lessons into his own style. At the same time, the influence of Kevin Howard—affectionately known to Adonis as “Uncle Kev”—remained a constant presence throughout his development. Howard provided not only technical advice but also steadfast encouragement during Adonis’s amateur career, contributing significantly to his growth as a fighter.

Yeah yeah
I’m the last of my kind
Yeah yeah
I’m the last of my kind
Try to find another just like me
You’ll be looking for a real long time
Cause I’m
Yeah yeah
I’m the last of my kind

Following the passing of Lisa Marie, Adonis found himself embraced by the unwavering support of his close-knit family. His siblings, along with his grandmother, Delois Rice, and his mother’s sisters – Aunt Tracey and Aunt Elaine, became steadfast pillars of encouragement during this difficult time. Except for Grandma Rice, Adonis’s family consistently attended his amateur boxing matches, offering cheers and believing in his abilities from ringside. Grandma Rice, deeply concerned about her grandson’s well-being, was initially hesitant to witness him competing. Over time, however, she decided to attend his last three professional bouts. There, she witnessed firsthand Adonis’s impressive skill and determination, as each of his opponents failed to reach the final bell. Now, Grandma Rice eagerly looks forward to Adonis’s next fight, proud of his accomplishments and hopeful for his continued success.

Unlike many of today’s young boxing prospects who rely heavily on managers or financial backers for their livelihood, Adonis Wilkins exemplifies the spirit of the old-school fighter by supporting himself with a full-time job. He works as a warehouse employee at KeHe Distributors-EMD in Maryland, clocking in every night from 10:00 PM to 7:30 AM, five days a week. This demanding schedule reflects his commitment not only to his sport but also to personal responsibility.

This world could be a son of a bitch
Well look through my eyes
Can’t always climb to safety
Sometimes you gotta fight
Go get it if you want it
Keep that fire burning inside
You won’t never find another like me
Cause I’m the last of my kind Yeah yeah
I’m the last of my kind
Yeah yeah
I’m the last of my kind

Adonis is fortunate to have the strong backing of his supervisor, John McFadden, who regularly attends all his fights, providing encouragement and support. Equally important is Everett Summerville, the Director at KeHe, who is an advocate for Adonis’s boxing ambitions. With such steadfast support from his workplace community, it seems likely that KeHe branding will soon be featured on Adonis’s robe and trunks, further cementing the connection between his professional life and his boxing journey.

Try to find another just like me
You’ll be looking for a real long time
Cause I’m
Yeah yeah
I’m the last of my kind

I’m the last of my kind
I’m the last of my kind

Up high in the red rock mountains
Almost lost my mind
I be out where the black birds hang yeah
Circle around them skies
Can’t wait much longer baby
Yeah it’s my time
You’ll never find another like me
I’m the last of my kind

For those who have followed along and learned the lyrics to “Last Of My Kind,” it is only fitting to reveal what truly drives Adonis Wilkins. His greatest inspiration and motivation come from his young son, Genesis. At just three years old—soon to turn four in May—Genesis is at the heart of everything Adonis does. Adonis is determined to provide Genesis with the best opportunities and experiences in life. Together with Keyare, Genesis’s mother, Adonis works in complete harmony, ensuring their son’s well-being and paving the way for his future success. Their collaborative efforts are focused on guiding Genesis towards greatness, reflecting the deep commitment and love both parents have for their child.

The loss of Adonis’s mother has left a profound mark on his life, serving as a powerful motivator behind his relentless pursuit of excellence in the boxing ring. This determination is further strengthened by his commitment to studying the styles of legendary fighters such as Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Mike Tyson, whose techniques and approaches he continues to learn from. Additionally, Adonis embraces the philosophy of Chris Eubanks, drawing inspiration from Eubanks’ belief that a challenging upbringing should never define one’s ambitions or outlook on life.

After reading the first draft of this article, Adonis made sure to emphasize the importance of recognizing two organizations that have played significant roles in his journey. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), where his mother served as a train conductor, has shown tremendous support throughout his career. In addition, the Richard Allen Masonic Lodge, of which his father is a member, has also been steadfast in encouraging Adonis as he pursues his goals. Both SEPTA and the Masonic Lodge have provided a foundation of support, reinforcing the strong community behind Adonis’s achievements.

With unwavering focus, Adonis Wilkins is set on reaching the pinnacle of his sport. His unique drive and approach make him stand out from his peers, and those who encounter him in competition should be prepared—because, as echoed in the sentiment, “You’ll never find another like him—he is the last of his kind!”
